Classification of pain

Neuropathic pain is caused by a lesion or disease of the central or peripheral somatosensory nervous system
eg diabetic neuropathy, post herpetic neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy

Mixed pain
combination of nociceptive or neuropathic pain together with changes in the spinal cord and brain, called central sensitistation.
eg low back pain, cancer pain

Nociceptive pain
pain that arises from actual or threatened damage to non-neural tissue and is due to activation of nociceptors
eg osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, visceral pain
